To really understand the height of Hippie culture, you need to look at everything it was standing against. In the 1960’s we were on the eve of destruction, humanity was facing annihilation whilst the politicians were plotting away. Those who wanted no part of this decision to come together and demonstrate that humanity can live in peace, love, and harmony. The answer was blowin’ in the wind, and the hippie culture was born. Based mainly out of San Francisco, California, the hippie movement promoted their tolerance of drugs, loving humanity, and protesting all forms of war. With the USA stuck in the Vietnam war, the world was very black & white with a hint of camouflage thrown in. Through LSD-influenced art, the world was opened up to trippy colors and patterns which had never been seen before. It looked like humanity was going to be all right now and we were all going to make love, not war. One of the first things you think of regarding the hippie culture is the festivals and the music. The Woodstock and Isle of Wight festivals of 1969 have passed into the stuff of legends where many “wish they were there”.
